If you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and want the option of making coffee at home, you have probably looked into different types of machines. Nespresso is a popular model that can make regular coffee or espresso. The goal of this Nespresso VertuoPlus Review is to help you decide whether this is the right machine for you based on your coffee consumption habits and the features you desire in your coffee machine.
Overview of the Nespresso VertuoPlus
What’s in the Box:
- Coffee Machine
- Cord Length – 29 inches
- Reservoir Size – 60 ounces
- Weight – 10.1 pounds
- Dimensions – 8.7 inches wide x 13.7 inches deep x 12.8 inches tall
Nespresso VertuoPlus Features
With the Nespresso VertuoPlus, you can choose from 5 cup sizes. The Espresso is 1.35 ounces, and the Double Espresso is 2.7 ounces. The Gran Lungo is 5 ounces. The coffee option brews 8 ounces, and the Alto option is 14 ounces. This machine is very versatile and can accommodate a variety of brewing size needs. This is a standout feature compared to other models.
The water tank holds up to 60 ounces. One unique feature we found in our Nespresso VertuoPlus review is that the water tank is adjustable. Therefore, if counter space is a concern, you can configure the water tank as you wish to help make the machine work in your space. You can also easily remove the water reservoir, which makes refilling it a breeze.
Time To Heat up
Unlike other coffee makers that take a long time to heat up, this machine boasts an impressive 15-second heat up time. This means you will be on your way to enjoying your coffee in no time.
A noteworthy feature we found during our Nespresso VertuoPlus review is the one-touch operation. This particular model allows you to conveniently choose from five different brew cup sizes with just the push of a button. Of course, you will need to use Nespresso Vertuo capsules with this coffee maker.
As a single-serve coffee machine, you can create barista-style drinks with just the touch of a button. In addition, your brewing will be consistent on this machine, compliments of Nespresso’s Centrifusion technology. This technology uses barcodes to deliver consistent cups of coffee, including perfect crema.
When you insert a capsule and close the lever, the capsule will spin up to 7,000 rotations per minute. This Centrifusion technology will blend ground coffee with water to produce the perfect crema even in larger cup sizes. In addition, the VertuoPlus will recognize the capsule inserted and read the capsule’s barcode to enhance the brewing for that specific blend. That is why only Vertuo capsules can be used.
The VertuoPlus is not designed to make milk-based coffees such as a cappuccino or a latte. However, if you would like to make such beverages at home, you can add an Aeroccino. The Aerocinno is an optional milk frother that you can purchase separately. It provides milk froth for your coffee with just one touch.
The Aerocinno can provide hot or cold milk froth and works on all types of milk. One impressive feature of the Aerocinno is that it froths the milk quickly in just a few seconds. It also does so without vibration or noise. This is a noteworthy feature as some milk frothers can be excessively loud.
What types of coffee can the Vertuo Plus Make?
You can make both coffee and espresso with this machine. You can also pour your fresh brew over ice if you prefer iced coffee beverages. Choose from a variety of coffee capsules to enjoy different types of coffee in this pod machine.
How to use a Nespresso VertuoPlus
The VertuoPlus is very intuitive and easy to use. On the VertuoPlus Deluxe, the brewing head is motorized to allow for easy opening and closing. There is also automatic capsule ejection, and the machine will shut off automatically if not used. The Nespresso VertuoPlus takes the guesswork out of brewing a great cup of coffee.
The machine will automatically adjust the brewing settings based on the capsule used. This precision brewing feature really makes the VertuoPlus stand out against other devices.
To use the machine, turn it on. After the short warm-up process, the green light will show on the top to let you know the device is ready to use. First, be sure there is sufficient water in the water container. Then, push the lever to open the top of the machine to insert your desired capsule.
Once the capsule is correctly inserted, close the top. Once you have placed your cup or mug on the drip tray, press the button on the top of the machine to begin brewing your coffee.
You do not have to select your coffee size as each capsule is programmed to different volumes ranging from .3 ounces to 17 ounces. Though there are built-in settings that the machine reads based on the capsule’s barcode, you can override them if your preferences differ.
To customize the water volume, insert the pod and close the machine head like you usually would. Then, press and hold the button on the top of the machine until your desired amount is dispensed. When you do this, the VertuoPlus will remember the new volume settings for that type of capsule.
So for future uses of that type of capsule, the machine will remember your preference instead of the preset amount programmed into the capsule’s barcode.

Compare the Different VertuoPlus Models
Nespresso does not make Nespresso machines; instead, they were invented, engineered, and designed by Nespresso. Therefore, when considering whether to buy a Nespresso machine, you will have to also decide on the brand. In North America, De’Longhi and Breville are the two most popular Nespresso options.
De’Longhi is an Italian company that was founded in the early 1900s. Breville, on the other hand, is an Australian brand founded in 1932.
Delonghi vs. Breville
Both machines will produce the same cup of coffee. The same Nespresso technology is used in both Breville and De’Longhi brands which means that the coffee results will be the same. The differences, however, relate to the design of the machines. In addition, there are cosmetic differences between the manufacturers that are worth noting.
For example, Breville’s VertuoPlus has a rounded top as opposed to De’Longhi’s. So when it comes down to whether to buy a De’Longhi or Breville brand, it is a matter of aesthetics and your preferences.
Nespresso VertuoPlus vs. Vertuo Next
Aesthetically, there are some key differences between the VertuoPlus and Vertuo Next. The Vertuo Next is available in white or dark grey. The Vertuo Next also features a slim-fit design. It is only 5.5 inches wide! If counter space is a concern of yours, this is a noteworthy feature.
However, the Vertuo Next only brews four cup sizes – single or double shots of espresso, 5 ounces, or 8 ounces of coffee. The Vertuo Next also offers an 18-ounce pour-over option as well that the VertuoPlus does not.
The water tank capacity is slightly smaller on the Vertuo Next at 37 ounces than the 40 ounces on the VertuoPlus or 60 ounces on the VertuoPlus Deluxe. However, both options require Nespresso Vertuo capsules and offer the one-touch easy brewing system that Nespresso is known for. Learn more in our Nespresso Vertuo Next review.
Nespresso Vertuo vs. Vertuo Plus
The Vertuo can be used to brew coffee with just the touch of a single button easily. The Centrifusion technology, an extraction technology patented by Nespresso, produces rich hazelnut-colored foam, or crema, at the top of the coffee. The Vertuo and VertuoPlus both utilize this technology.
Both models use capsule recognition technology to prepare the best coffee each time based on the blend. This takes the guesswork out of preparing coffee or espresso shots. The Vertuo is 8.32 inches wide x 11.91 inches deep x 11.93 inches tall and is made of metal and plastic.
The removable water tank holds 40 ounces of water, and the capsule container will hold 13 to 20 used capsules. Unfortunately, the Vertuo can only brew two cup sizes – 8 ounces or 1.35 ounces. If you want more brewing size options, the VertuoPlus is the better option for you.
Cleaning and Maintenance
To protect the longevity of your machine, you will need to clean it regularly. This is not a complicated process as there are only a few parts to clean. This machine does not have portafilters or filter baskets; instead, you just need to clean the drip tray, capsule container, and water tank. While other machines can get messy from the ground coffee, this machine’s used coffee stays inside the capsules and is dry.
How to Descale a Nespresso VertuoPlus
Descaling is an essential step in the cleaning and maintenance process. You will need to descale your machine regularly to keep it operating optimally. The VertuoPlus has a descaling alert to let you know that it is time to descale the machine. The button will flash green and red to alert you. Once the button starts signaling that descaling is needed, you can only make a few more cups of coffee without descaling.
The descaling process takes about 20 minutes on Nespresso machines. First, turn the machine on and raise the head to eject the used capsule to start the process. Then, lower the machine head and turn the machine off. Finally, remove the water container and used capsule container. You will then need to fill the water tank with one unit of Nespresso descaling liquid and add at least 17 ounces of water.
To start the descaling process, you will push the button and lever down for three seconds. The light on the button will turn orange. Press the lever down once. This will cause the machine to enter descaling mode. Place a cup beneath the outlet. The cup will need to hold at least 27 ounces.
Once the cup is in place, push the button to start the descaling process. The orange light will continue to blink during the entire process. The machine will stop when the process is complete. more
After descaling, you need to complete a rinse cycle. You will need to empty the water reservoir and clean it. It would help if you also cleaned the cup support before beginning the rinsing cycle. Push the button when you are ready to start the process. The orange light will blink every two seconds during this process.
When done, press the button and lever simultaneously for three seconds. This will cause the machine to exit this cleaning mode. It would help if you let the machine cool down for ten minutes before using it again. For more details check out our How to Descale a Nespresso post.
How to Clean a Nespresso VertuoPlus
It would be best if you regularly wiped the machine’s exterior with a clean cloth to keep the machine clean and quickly remove any spills or drips. You should also empty the drip tray and clean it after each use.

This Nespresso machine uses specialized coffee pods called Nespresso capsules. While you are limited to this brand of coffee pod, using them ensures a consistent coffee quality. Making coffee could not be easier than inserting a capsule and pressing one button.
Nespresso VertuoPlus Review Wrap-up
I like that this machine will house numerous used pods as well. This is one less step to worry about in the morning as you can let the used capsules collect in the repository for a while before removing them. The capsules are also fully recyclable through Nespresso’s aluminum recycling program.
With this machine, you can enjoy barista-quality coffee without having to learn all about the coffee-making process. On fancy espresso machines, a lot can go wrong to the detriment of your coffee’s taste and quality. For example, if you do not grind the beans correctly or if you do not correctly pull a shot of espresso, your drink’s flavor will be affected.
With the Nespresso VertuoPlus, these elements are taken care of for you. In addition, the use of the capsules means blend-specific brewing is handled by the machine, without you having to adjust any settings.
If you prefer beverages that need steamed milk, you can add the Aerocinno. This milk frother will allow you to enjoy a greater variety of drinks, even though the VertuoPlus makes excellent crema on its own.
Pod machines are well-loved because of their simplicity. The VertuoPlus certainly fits the bill on a simple yet powerful coffee machine. It heats up and brews quickly, meaning that you can be enjoying a delicious cup of coffee in no time. If you are in the market for a new machine, definitely check out the Nespresso VertuoPlus.
